Sebastian Kulbaka was born 1985 in Łódź, Poland and grew up in Italy. In 2024 he received a MFA from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts, KASK, in Ghent, Belgium. In 2016 he graduated with a Master’s degree in Painting from the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome between 2008 and 2010.
In recent years, Kulbaka has focused his artistic practice on exploring difficult emotions that shape our everyday existence. Through a series of artistic rituals, he investigates complex feelings such as anger, grief, abandonment, jealousy, inadequacy, and the tensions arising from arguments and conflicts.
One of Kulbaka’s key projects is a public installation within a cube made of wood, beeswax, and cotton, where people were invited to draw and share difficult moments from their lives. This direct engagement with the public inspired the artist to explore new subjects: monsters and shadows, which represent the projections of his personal reflections and inner conflicts.
Kulbaka employs a combination of painting techniques, lace, embroidery and beeswax to create these “threshold monsters,” symbolic figures representing the conflicts and challenges the artist must face and overcome in his journey.
These monsters stand between a “before” and an “after” in his existential path, representing emotional and psychological blocks that, once overcome, allow the artist to cross new thresholds of awareness and personal growth.
Sebastian Kulbaka participated in numerous group and solo shows in Italy, Belgium and other European countries. Recent exhibitions include “Voir et revoir” at Galerie Marie Rigaux in Scy Chazelles, France, in 2024. In 2023 he had his solo show “Revolution” at Mairania in Merano, Italy and “Blow a Wish” at Blanco in Ghent, Belgium and participated at the group show ”Volt” at WARP in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium. In 2022 the “BeeCube” project saw multiple iterations, including at KASK in Ghent and during the Bolzano Art Weeks in Italy.
In 2020 Sebastian Kulbaka won a fellowship for a residency at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris. In 2023 he was selected as a participant for the Artist Village, in Middelburg, Netherlands, organised by WARP in Sint-Niklaas. His research and work has been supported by various grants, including a grant from the Nomadic School of Art in Belgium and the Arts Council of the Autonomous Province of Bolzano, Italy. His works are in private and public collections.
